Jay-Z played a 45 minute set at the iHeartRadio fest at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas on Friday night. Alicia Keys made headlines when she performed a new song for the audience but Jay-Z also made a huge splash by inviting the lady for ‘Empire State Of Mind during his own set. Below is a report by Billboard who also have a highlights clip which can be watched after the jump.
Jay-Z closed the evening with a 45-minute set which featured a cameo from Alicia Keys for “Empire State of Mind,” while every other act turned in 20 or so minutes of music at “the largest live concert event in radio history,” a bit of incalculable hyperbole from the promoter Clear Channel. Breaks between acts were always about five minutes and filled with either videos of performers talking about radio’s effect on their careers or else advertisements from State Farm (really?), Budweiser (that made sense) and others. Nearly every seat in the 12,000-capacity was arena was filled within an hour of the 7:30 p.m. start time; the crowd had thinned by about a third as Jay-Z was wrapping up.

Alicia Keys graces the cover of June 2011 issue of ESSENCE magazine. In the issue, she has candidly spoken about her married life with Swizz Beatz, motherhood and also dedicating a new song to her mother on her upcoming album.
“In the past, I’ve written mostly from my own perspective. But I just wrote a song for my next album that was inspired by a conversation that I had with a man who was expressing how indebted he feels to God. As much as I believe in God, for me that translated into how much I owe my mother for who I am. So I went home and I wrote ‘I Owe You.’ It’s dedicated to her.”

VIDEO: ALICIA KEYS REMINISCES IN HP PROMO

On 10:41
Alicia Keys looks back on the beginning of her career in a promo for “The Beat Is On with HP” campaign. In the clip, the glowing songstress recalls recording her debut Songs in A Minor in her Harlem bedroom, turning her closet into a booth, and driving her fellow tenants nuts.
“You could imagine how we tortured the neighbors. They would bang on the ceiling with a broom come three or four in the morning and I’m sitting here singing passionately at the top of my voice,” she said. “I really feel like a lot of that is the reason why that album has the particular feeling that it does, because we didn’t have anything. Sometimes, when you don’t have much, you make the best out of what you have and it makes a vibe and an energy.”
Take a stroll down memory lane with the R&B songbird.
