Drake & Common's Beef Intensifies

Posted by Canrus On 09:53

Well it’s been a battle of subliminals. Let’s start with Drake closing out his set at Cali Christmas, with a tangent along the lines of “I will never stop doing this for ya’ll. I don’t give a fuck if you have something to say to me. Say it to my muthafuckin’ face. Just cause I sing don’t make me no bitch. That was thrown in the air, the same night Big Sean brought out Common, interesting to say the least.

Now fast forward today, after hearing news of his sophomore LP reaching platinum status, Drake took to Twitter to celebrate, in doing so dropped less than 140 characters which could be taken as a subtle jab back at Common or Pusha T, as many felt Lonnie’s served him up on Sweet, and Terrence Thornton later following up.

Common called into WGCI The Morning Riot and addresses the dust being kicked up, stating:

I made a song that’s definitely a Hip-Hop song; in hip-hop it’s like stepping in the ring. Rap is a contact sport so I talked about there’s cats that are soft and sweet. Drake felt offended and it was directed toward him so he said, “Man, say it to my face.” My thing is I’m going to keep it hip-hop and stay on that tip but if he falls in that category then so be it. I’m not going to hold my tongue like I say in the song.

I look at it like this, when Jay-Z made ‘DOA,’ I don’t think he specifically was like “I’m going to write this song about T-Pain” but T-Pains fits in that category so he might felt offended. At the end of the day, it’s all hip-hop.

Update: 40 Response as well.

Video: Dr. Maya Angelou & Common Clear Up N-Word Controversy On 106 & Park

Posted by Canrus On 01:27

Renaissance woman Dr. Maya Angelou who recites a poem on the opening track of Common’s The Dreamer / The Believer album, ‘The Dreamer’ was upset with the rapper over the use of N-word on the song. She told NY Post this:

“I had no idea that Common was using the piece we had done together on [a track] in which he also used the ‘N’ word numerous times. I’m surprised and disappointed. I don’t know why he chose to do that. I had never heard him use that [word] before. I admired him so because he wasn’t singing the line of least resistance.”

Common appeared on 106 & Park last evening where Dr. Maya Angelou phoned in. Together with Common, she cleared up the controversy & misunderstanding. Afterward, Common spoke on his ‘Sweet’ record and if it was a Drake diss.

Common Covers JET

Posted by Canrus On 08:31

Here’s Common Sense on the cover of the new edition of JET magazine. Below are a few excerpts from the cover story. Don’t forget to pick up his new album The Dreamer / The Believer on December 20th.

On Love:“I think the core of the human being and the heart is love, and we all want that,” he said. “Love has allowed me to do the things I’m doing in life. I feel like we all deserve that — to receive love and give it, too. I think when you give that love — love of God, love of other people, self-love — you’re able to make the world better. Your days go better.”

On Being Whipped: “I have been in love, and I did get my heart broken,” he said, noting that he’s man enough to openly share sans inhibition. “As an adult, I can say I’ve been through love, and this is some of the experiences I’ve had. Men love. Men go crazy over women. They go to prison, start wars and lose hair over them. Don’t act like you can’t acknowledge it. It may be that you haven’t been through it, so I’m not afraid to say it.

On His Hustle: “I think the core of the human being and the heart is love, and we all want that,” he said. “Love has allowed me to do the things I’m doing in life. I feel like we all deserve that — to receive love and give it, too. I think when you give that love — love of God, love of other people, self-love — you’re able to make the world better. Your days go better.”
