Singer-songwriter and record producer, Labrinth is releasing his new album soon and Urban Empire HQ recently had a chance to interview the 23 year old talented UK artist. In the interview Labrinth talks about how he got into the music industry, his single "Earthquake" with Tinie Tempah, what to expect from his new album and more...
UEHQ Thanks for taking time to do this interview with us, we really appreciate it. I've just got a couple questions i wanted to ask you.... so i'm just gonna get into it.
Labrinth: Alright let's do it.
UEHQ: For those that might not know that you are give us one word that'll best describe yourself?
Labrinth: Variety, Crazy variety. I think that's probably it.
UEHQ. How did you get into the music industry?
Labrinth: I produced an album called A.D.H.D., for a guy named Master Shortie and that kind of got me a publishing deal and i started working with all the UK artists you can imagine and ended up working with Tinie Tempah and producing "Pass Out" which became my big hit for him.
UEHQ: Who are some of your favorite artists that you grew up listening to?
Labrinth: Busta Rhymes, Nirvana, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, lots man.
UEHQ: So basically a lot of artists influence your music.
Labrinth: Yeah man it was very mixed when i was younger, Dolly Parton, yeah there were so many mixes when i was younger.
UEHQ: How would you describe your style of music?
Labrinth: Like i said to you variety is the way for me so one day i might be doing some hardcore gritty club song and then the next day i'll be doing a soft beautiful acoustic folk song and you can't pigeonhole me, so i think that's my vibe really.
UEHQ. Your single Earthquake featuring Tinie Tempah is doing well on the chats here in Australia. Can you tell us how that record came about?
Labrinth: I needed to make a record, after releasing my first record it took me about a year to put out this record (Earthquake), i just needed to come back with something that was loud enough to pull every air in the UK, and of course Tinie heard the record like about a month after i made it, and i was like it needs something cause I had everything, I had all the verses, i had all the choruses and stuff like that and i was like it needs that one little bit, then i called up Tinie, sent him the record and i think he had a verse in like 3 days, came back from America and just recorded the verse in the studio.
UEHQ: What's the name of your upcoming album called and when should fans expect it to drop?
Labrinth: My new album is coming out April 2nd and it's called Electronic Earth and it's gonna be fun man. I can't wait, i should be in Australia soon, hopefully.
UEHQ: Yeah i was actually going to ask you, if you have ever toured Australia before?
Labrinth: No i haven't toured in Australia but i've been offered a few things that might be happening soon, so hopefully i can get down there soon and you guys can get to see what i'm all about.
UEHQ: How did you come with the Title Electronic Earth? Is there a story behind the title?
Labrinth: It was just a thing i was going through, my live set is very much electronic and acoustic you know, one minute i use a club song and then the next i'm performing like a musical like an acoustic live show. It was kind of like the theme of everything that i was doing and was about how i was trying to mix artistry and energy, mix certain music with organic music together. It was just naming the time and the era.
UEHQ: Can you please let us know what to expect from the album? Any features?
Labrinth: A lot of energy man. I've got Tinie on there, i've got Emeli Sande on there, I had Busta Rhymes jump on a record as well.
UEHQ: What advice would you give to any upcoming artist out there trying to make in the music industry?
Labrinth: Advice would be, be you. don't try and do what's out there unless you believe it kind of represents who you are and just make what you believe in and i'm very sure it will take you where you need to be.
UEHQ: On Behalf of Urban Empire HQ thanks for having this interview with us we really appreciate it.
Labrinth: Thanks a lot for having this chat with me, and hopefully i'll see you down there soon.
