The HP U160: a 15.6-inch portable monitor

Posted by Tendai Chisvo On 00:38

Here's a novel idea, The HP U160 is a 15.6-inch monitor built to be taken on the go. The monitor connects to a laptop via USB and can includes a foldable carrying case that acts as a stand.

The 15.6-inch screen has a resolution of 1366 x 768 and the carrying case is made of leather. It weighs 3.4 pounds and is 1.2-inches thick. For comparison's sake, this is slightly heavier than the average Ultrabook. The contrast ratio and brightness levels for the monitor are said to be comparable with the average notebook screen. HP hasn't revealed any other specifications for the monitor.

ETA late January for $179.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini colourways

Posted by Tendai Chisvo On 00:12

It appears there won’t be any changes made to its inner parts, so you’re still getting a 4-inch Super AMOLED WVGA display, a 1GHz dual-core NovaThor processor, 1GB of RAM, 8/16GB internal storage, microSD support, 5MP rear camera, VGA front cam, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

If only it was priced lower. Here’s hoping that aside from the fresh coat of paints, The Korean behemoth will also consider slashing its price.

We know that the picture isn’t very clear, but what do you think of the new colors?

Crafty collaborators Adam Ben-Dror, Shanshan Zhou and Joss Doggett have succeeded in bringing an inanimate object to life, just like in the Pixar movies. Watch above as their Pinokio Lamp, inspired by the lively Luxo lamp that introduces every Pixar film, quizzically observes its environment and even plays games like peek-a-boo, thanks to built-in facial recognition technology.

Tech Talk: Top 8 Windows 8 Devices

Posted by Tendai Chisvo On 22:12

Microsoft has gone full steam ahead and released their new Flagship OS Windows 8. Some hate it, some love it (we love it!!) Check out a comprehensive list of the top 8 Windows machine's on the market.

Microsoft Surface Tablet

Microsoft's sleek new tablet has been the poster child for Windows 8, always making an appearance at press events with the attachable, colorful keyboard in tow. Bult entirely by Microsoft, this tablet is a first for the company. The Surface will be released October 26 at a starting price of $499. The Touch Cover and the Type Cover keyboards will be available at $119.99 and $129.99, respectively. You can also bundle a Touch Cover with a Surface tablet for a starting at $599.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro

This tablet, with attachable keyboard, consists of an 11.6-inch touchscreen, as well as the Samsung S-Pen stylus. The price of the tablet will be $2,199, while the keyboard will cost an additional $189. Both will be available on Oct. 26, according to CNET.
Asus Taichi This nifty laptop includes a built-in second screen on the front panel of the lid, which can function separately or mirror the interior screen. Engaget reports the device will be available this November at the starting price of $1,299.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13

Lenovo's Ultrabook screen flips a full 360 degrees and is billed as a laptop with the "touch experience of a tablet," according to Lenovo's website. The IdeaPad will be released October 26 per Gizmag. The company's website states the starting price will be set at $999.

Toshiba Satellite U920t

To convert this laptop into a tablet, users simply slide the screen on an attached runner instead of detaching a keyboard that was bought separately. While the tablet may be slightly heavier than some of the competition, it's also a sturdy-feeling device. The Satellite is currently available online and will ship in four to five weeks at a starting price of $1,149.99.

Sony VAIO Tap 20

This PC will provide great entertainment with its 20-inch screen and handy kickstand. Microsoft wants you to "forget gathering around the TV," and instead hopes you gather around the VAIO for multiple forms of distraction. The Windows website states this PC will cost $999, and will be available at the end of October.

HP Envy X2

Another laptop-tablet duo, the Envy is functional with either touch technology, or a keyboard that latches into place. It also has 14 hours of battery life, and weighs only a little over 3 pounds (keyboard included). According to the Windows site, the Envy will start at $849. Computerworld reports the device will begin shipping on Nov. 14.

Dell XPS 12

Convertible Built with a mechanical henge, this Dell hybrid quickly converts from a laptop into a tablet. (To see the transition in action, click here.) Dell's blog reports that the device is currently available for preorder in the U.S. at a starting price of $1,199.

HP Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4 spruced up for Windows 8

Posted by Tendai Chisvo On 21:48

Laptops with touch screens aren't new territory for HP. Windows 8 and its touch-friendly interface, however, gives consumers more of a reason to have one, even on traditional laptop designs like the new HP Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4.

It looks like a pretty standard laptop, albeit a nice-looking one, with brushed black metal on the outside with nothing but a simple HP logo decorating the lid. There's silver trim around the outside giving you a hint about the brushed silver metal inside surrounding the keyboard.

The ultrabook branding may make you think the Envy is especially thin and light; it is not. However, at just less than an inch thick and weighing 4.7 pounds, it's certainly not huge and heavy.

You might be wondering what "Pheed" is?

Posted by Tendai Chisvo On 16:39

Pheed is the latest social network start up to roll off the factory line, promising to change our internet lives (or something). It combines aspects of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr (among others), and coats itself in a celebrity-endorsed sheen. So what is Pheed? Long story short, it's a shitshow.

Pheed is a social network... Pheed is nothing more and nothing less than a social network. You sign up, you follow people, people follow you. Nothing too groundbreaking here. ...that lets you post images, videos, songs, or just plan text...

In an interview with Fast Company, Pheed's founder lamented that Instagram was too simple. So he and his team made a Frankenstein product that follows the same basic conceptual structure of Instagram, but adds more shareable elements. ...but also has a built in commenting interface... Like Twitter and Tumblr, Pheed allows you to like, dislike, and bookmark things from other users.

Unlike Twitter, however, Pheed allows you to directly comment on anything and everything any other user posts, adding hashtags galore along the way. As you might imagine, that gets messy. ...and is designed to let notable users charge for content.

The master vision for Pheed is that celebrities will begin using the network, and users can subscribe to their feed for a premium, and deliver must-have exclusive content. Musicians could post new tracks. Actors could post side vids. But will that actually happen? Maybe. Will it actually work? Probably not. Anything worth seeing will eventually make its way outside the network, and it's hard to imagine Pheed exclusives being anything but fluffy nonsense anyways.

Pheed mostly looks like a streamlined version of Facebook (which doesn't necessarily mean it's all that streamlined), surrounded by a whole lot of marketing hype. Oh and it will post garbled tweets when you update your Pheed, which is just, ugh. No thank you.

In summary: Pheed is a cynical cash-grab that it's unlikely you'll join, much less hear about ever again.

The long Awaited much anticipated iPhone 5

Posted by Tendai Chisvo On 01:47

Unless you have been living under a rock, a big one at that. Here's the iPhone 5 in all its glory.

"Apple makes itself an easy target. For all its bluster, its secrecy, its aloofness, its promises of magic and revolution; it's easy to fall into the trap of loving or loathing the company, what it stands for and, most importantly, its products. But when you strip back all the hype and hyperbole, the iPhone 5 is still a smartphone like any other..."
